  • Careers & Work Experience

It is the aim of Careers Education Information and Guidance programme at St. Bernard’s to give every student the best preparation for transition to their future careers, further and higher education and training.  The School is committed to providing a planned programme of careers education, information and guidance for all students in Years 7 – 13.

The Careers Co-ordinator works in conjunction with the school leadership team and governors to ensure the implementation of the Careers Policy.

Mrs H Davies is a graduate and a fully qualified Careers Advisor with a post graduate Diploma in Careers Education, Guidance and Curriculum Development.  She is employed by the school, providing individual, impartial Careers Information Advice and Guidance; and is always available to offer help and support to students. Mrs Davies is based in the Careers Office in the Dining Hall extension; where students are always welcome.

The Careers department is resourced with books, information and college and university prospectuses and the school VLE site has a comprehensive Careers section, where students can research colleges, universities, apprenticeships and job opportunities.

A careers programme is delivered through the PHSE programme in Years 7 to 11, to encourage the students to reflect on and consider the factors involved in making decisions about their future and the options available to them. Careers Interviews, Work Experience, Work Shadowing, Mock Interviews, employer visits, a Careers Fair and Employer Mentoring are offered to school students.

The majority of our students continue onto university and expert support is available to help students make the right decision.  There is also support available to those wishing to enter employment or take a gap year.  Careers advice is always tailored to meet the needs of individual students.

    Work Experience

Work Experience presents an invaluable opportunity for the student to spend 2 weeks in a work environment and this opportunity is given to every students towards the end of the summer term in Year 10. The reasons behind creating the opportunity are:

    • To gain an insight into the world of work
    • To work alongside adults as part of a team
    • To gain and practice employability skills
    • To develop independence, confidence and self esteem
    • To begin to understand the links between the school curriculum and the work place
    • To increase motivation to continue their study
    • To explore career options
